Analogue is alive in the Highlands ✶

Workshops

We offer a number of Analogue and Digital workshops, from Cyanotype to get to know your digital camera. All of our workshops are led by experienced volunteers who possess a wide range of visual art and photography techniques.

Here is a few examples, but check of Eventbright for what coming up.

Cyanotype Workshop

Learn about the simple chemistry involved in one of the earliest 19th-century photographic processes, to make beautiful, rich blue prints – without a camera!

It uses a two-part solution to sensitise paper, clothes, and wood (almost anything it sticks to). Then, place objects like feathers or leaves on top and expose them to sunlight or UV light. Wash off the excess, and you have created a photograph! 🔆

Experimental Workshop

Ready to try your hand at making something new in the darkroom? Come along to get your hands messy and have fun creating photographs without a camera. You’ll learn how to make photograms using found objects and paper negatives, and you’ll experiment with the chemigram process that uses ordinary household ingredients, such as honey 🍯, as a resist on photographic paper to create unique patterns, textures and shapes.

Pinhole Workshop

Pinhole photography is a long-known way to make photographic images without a lens. You’ll learn about the unique qualities of these magical images; you’ll learn to make your own pinhole cameras out of everyday objects; and you’ll explore the creative potential of this simple, slow photography. 🐌

Beginners Black and White Photography Workshop

Everything you need to know to start in black and white analogue photography – in one day! Learn to shoot, develop and print 35mm black and white film at the Inverness Darkroom. Cameras are available for use, or bring your own!

Half of the session will focus on getting to know the camera, hopefully wandering outside to explore photographic techniques 📷

Then develop the film before starting printing in the darkroom under the red light, using light and chemicals to make the images appear on the paper. 💡🧑‍🔬
